The job of leadership

It’s easy to take swipes at corporate leadership”, the types who haven’t done any individual contributions in years and meander from one meeting to the next. But I notice what good leadership is and what value it brings mostly by the absence thereof.

Not an exhaustive list, but what leadership needs to do:

  1. Have a grand vision of where we’re going. This has to be deeper than just increase conversion by .00001% next quarter. In fact, a grand vision requires making short-term trade offs in order to be achieved.
  2. Communicating that vision. If you ask around the water cooler, everyone should understand the vision and strategy in their own words, and, most importantly, how their own role is part of that.
  3. Modeling the culture.
