Soul and authenticity

I’m still thinking about duty and responsibility, and this lyric from Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right is apt:

I give her my heart but she wanted my soul

One of the cruel practices in tech companies, is the need to pretend that you care about mission of the company, the founder’s every whim, in short to believe. People look at you like some sort of mercenary monster if you say that you’re just here for the pay check.

I’m not talking about dragging your heels and doing the bare minimum. I mean nailing your professional responsibilities, even going above and beyond. But you can’t say you’re just doing your job. You have to believe in some sort of vision.

This inauthenticity is harmful.

I can do boring, mundane, and even unpleasant tasks at work, but please let me keep the dignity of saying it was grunt work and I did it because it was my job.
