Willy Wonka and normality

From DHH:

In The Pathology of Normalcy, [Erich Fromm] spells out exactly what makes modern man condemned: Getting everything he wanted while having nobody asking him for anything. The satiation of every desire paired with a relief of every responsibility is a psychological death sentence to many.

Or you could get basically the same from ‌Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Our modern discourse has precious little to say about duty and responsibility, and even less to say about the rewards for loyalty and service.

It’s something more than just another transaction, in a society that’s already made nearly everything transactional.
